Staying Safe on New York City Streets: Tips to Avoid Pedestrian Accidents

February 16, 2024

New York City is a bustling metropolis, and walking is one of the best ways to get around. However, with so many cars, bikes, and buses on the road, it's important to be aware of pedestrian accidents. In 2019 alone, there were over 28,000 pedestrian injuries and fatalities in NYC. To help keep you safe while walking in the city that never sleeps, we've put together some tips for avoiding pedestrian accidents.

Always obey traffic signals and signs.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but it's essential to follow traffic rules when crossing the street. Wait for the "walk" signal before crossing the street and make sure to look both ways before stepping off the curb. Be sure to cross at designated crosswalks or intersections only.

Stay alert while walking

With so much going on around you in NYC, it’s easy to get distracted while walking. Try not to use your phone or listen to music when you're crossing streets or walking near busy roads. Pay attention to your surroundings at all times – this means watching for turning vehicles or bicycles.

Wear bright clothing

Wearing brightly colored clothing can help increase your visibility as a pedestrian especially during low light conditions such as early mornings or late evenings.

Use sidewalks where possible

Sticking to sidewalks is one of the safest ways to walk in NYC since it keeps you away from traffic lanes where cars are driving fast.

Be mindful of drivers making turns

Pedestrians should be cautious when crossing streets even if they have been given clearance by the “walk” signal; drivers might not see them because they are focused on making turns rather than looking out for pedestrians who are still crossing.

Pedestrian safety in New York City is a serious matter. By following these tips, you can help reduce the likelihood of involvement in a pedestrian accident. Remember to always stay alert while walking, obey traffic rules while crossing the street, wear bright clothing for better visibility, use sidewalks and be mindful of drivers making turns. Together, we can make our city streets safer for everyone.
